As I set off into the lake in my kayak, I looked back to the shore
and saw it quickly disappearing. The night was full of thick fog. I could not remember a
time where I had ever seen it so thick. Soon I was in the middle of nowhere. This mist had
surrounded me, there was no land to be seen. The visability dropped to about a fifteen
foot radius around my tiny boat. It was one of the most beautiful and intimidating things
I had ever seen, like being lost inside another world. The tiny flashlight I had showed
the floor of the lake, crystal clear, and there was far better visibility under the water
than above. I turned my light off to enjoy a more natural energy that burned through the
mist, and was the only thing in the sky you could see.
The moon glowed, illuminating the mist, and giving it a beautiful blue-gray color. I
rowed further into the lake, now stopping a moment to put on my headset, and I turned on
my astral meditation music. It brought me a feeling of connection with this large sphere
that smiled down upon me, as it fought through the mist to guide me.
I continued to row, and then I was suddenly startled. A tiny bat had decided to
circle me a few times as he must have been attracted to the movements of my oar into the
air as I paddled. Taking in all that I saw at once, the mist, the moon, and my new flying
friend was awesome. It gave the scene a vampire like effect if you could imagine such a
thing. The bat had seemed to leave me just as quickly as it had come, and I almost felt
saddened at its quick departure. I waved my oar upright into the air, hoping to call him
back, and to have him surprise me by whipping by through this large cloud that had
swallowed me, but he was gone. My tiny new friend had left me.
I soon began to head back to the shore, that is if I could find it. I headed towards
the direction of the moon, and soon, saw a blackness, which was the outline of the forest
just beyond the shore. I looked back into the mist, thinking how something so simple could
bring such feelings. Peace and tranquillity, yet intimidating and startling. Like a world
of nothingness, just the mist, a floor made of water, and the moon to light the way for a
wary traveller in his tiny boat.
